I think pizza has become one of my favorite things to eat. That and ice cream… which is why I am in love with Zero Zero, a gourmet pizza joint in SoMa famous for serving Neapolitan style pizzas and homemade Strauss Creamery soft serve ice cream. Zero Zero is actually owned by the same company that owns Pizzeria Picco in Larkspur which pretty much serves the exact same items, only Zero Zero is better because it’s near my work and home. Let’s get into the food.

Zero Zero Fried Brussel Sprouts

We started with the fried brussel sprouts with bacon and pears. So crisp, salty and bacon-y. Who would’ve thunk such a healthy vegetable could taste like a potato chip. I came back to Zero Zero last night and they already took this off the menu! Perhaps they’re a seasonal item.

Zero Zero Mushroom Bruschetta

Next, we had a very woodsy bruschetta with wild mushrooms, ricotta and prosciutto. I couldn’t identify the mushrooms, but they were meaty, earthy and tender. The toast was so buttery and crispy, it melted in my mouth.

Zero Zero Margherita Extra

Between 4 people, we shared 3 whole pizzas – the margherita extra, the Townsend, and the special of the day. Let’s talk about the crust of the pizzas first. I’d say it’s my favorite crust out of all the pizza restaurants I’ve been to. While still thin, the crust wasn’t wet and flimsy like other Neapolitan pizzas. The margherita was actually okay. I have yet to try any other restaurant can beat Tony’s award-winning version. It seemed like it was missing a little something, like it didn’t have enough flavor.

Zero Zero Townsend

The Townsend, however, is uh-may-zing! I rate it #1 against other potato pizzas like this one. The pizza is topped with roasted garlic, young organic potato, prosciutto cotto, mozzarella, parmesan and rosemary oil. Such an orgy of flavors. Think a side of roasted potatoes with bacon and cheese on a pizza.

Zero Zero Special Butternut Squash

The special of the day is by far my favorite. The sad thing is.. it’s a special. So, I probably won’t be able to have this again any time soon. The pizza was topped with a broccoli raab pesto and mozzarella cheese. Nutty, sweet, creamy. Yum, just my kind of pizza.

Zero Zero Soft Serve Menu

To make the night extra special, we ordered some soft serve ice cream made from Strauss Creamery milk. You’re able to build your own sundae with their special soft serve menu. Just pick a flavored ice cream, a base and a topping and you’ve got yourself your own creation. Everyone talks about the vanilla ice cream with olive oil and sea salt, but I got the vanilla with caramel sauce and warm spiced apples. Our creation was the perfect balance of tart to sweet. I’d come here every day if I could, but it’s hard to get a table. Make sure you make reservations here.

Hands-down, THE best clam chowda in the Bay Area. I also like the dairy-free clam chowder at Barbara’s Fish Trap, but Sam’s serves their masterful version of the classic New England clam chowder. It had the best consistency. Not too thick, not too creamy. There was an abundance of large clam necks, smoky bacon and Yukon gold potatoes. It couldn’t be any more perfect. K and I each ordered lobster rolls which were absolutely fabulous. The chewy, toasted roll is stuffed with, what it seems like, a whole lobster and lots of butter. It also comes with a side of coleslaw and chips. K swapped the chips for fries which I was totally envious of. My trick, add the coleslaw to the sandwich. It adds some sweetness and a crunch. Yum! I’m giving Sam’s 4 clubs since our service was a little off that night.

I’ve been debating whether or not to write this post. Not because I have mixed feelings about the restaurant, but because I don’t want this place to start getting crowded. You may have already been or even heard of the famed Cuban fare at Cha Cha Cha in the Haight, but they’ve opened another location in San Mateo. And the best part is, not many have discovered it yet! Thanks to our good friend, Victor, for the tip. We ate like kings for lunch. For 4 people, we ordered fried potatoes, Jamaican jerk chicken, black mussels, Cajun shrimp, lechon asado, and a coconut flan. The fried potatoes were different than the Spanish tapas version, but it was super good. I don’t think these were battered, just fried. The best part is the creamy spicy sauce that comes with it. It’s almost like the orange sauce from La Vics in San Jose. The Cajun shrimp is served in another creamy spicy sauce that I could not stop soaking my bread in. The lechon asado was probably my favorite dish. Juicy pork that melts in your mouth with a side of rice and beans and pan fried plantains. Mmm, so good. We loved the plantains so much, we ordered another helping. Everything else we had was amazing. I just hope, for my sake, that this place doesn’t get busy!

Ever since we came back from Europe, K and I have been craving Spanish tapas. After a quick search on Yelp, we came across LaLoLa in Chinatown. I called ahead. No wait? Okay, let’s go. When I first walked into the restaurant, I was smacked in the face with a strange smell. It was pungent and sour. If I wasn’t so hungry, I would’ve turned around and walked away.

I ordered a ton of food – crab stuffed piquillos, patatas bravas, fries topped with Iberian ham and a fried egg, mushrooms with garlic and white wine, and fried calamari. To be honest, nothing really stood out. The flavors were muted. The first red flag was the stale complimentary bread. Seriously? What Spanish restaurant serves bad bread?? I order patatas bravas anytime I see it on the menu and I was so disappointed after my first bite. The potatoes were dry and they were topped with way too much mayo. It’s safe to say I won’t be coming back here again.

A coworker invited me to lunch the other day and suggested we go to the Armani Cafe in Union Square. Little did I know, it was a cafe inside an Armani store. To be honest, it was a little strange sitting at a bar in the middle of a clothing store, but I was surprised by the quality of the food. I ordered the Insalata di Fichi, mixed greens with caramelized figs, toasted walnuts, bleu cheese topped with a dark balsamic vinaigrette. The ingredients were very fresh and I was impressed that they used local ingredients in their dishes.  The leaves were well-dressed, the figs were sweet and chewy, and they had a mountain of bleu cheese – all things I love. I didn’t care too much for the walnuts though. They tasted a little raw and could’ve used a little more time toasting. I also had a virgin mojito, but I’ve never really been a fan of mojitos, so I won’t comment on this one.
