SF Zine Fest – 9/4-5

Motormouth Press

The SF Zine Fest is happening this weekend, and I just wanted to point out the delicious looking stationary from Motormouth Press they will be having there.

The SF Zine Fest is an annual conference for independent and underground publishers.  This year it will be at the SF County Fair Building (formerly Hall of Flowers) on 9th Ave. at Lincoln Way (in Golden Gate Park).

All-you-can-eat Cupcakes at Cake Moda’s Cupcake Wars – 9/25

August and September must be the months for food and drink festivals! Recently there was the SF Street Food Festival and the Eat Real Fest (I went to both); next there is the Gheradelli chocolate festival and Oktoberfest. One to look out for is Cake Moda’s Cupcake Wars, a cupcake bake-off at Fort Mason on Sept 25 from 4-9pm.

You can enter to participate in the contest as a professional or amateur, but for those of you who just want to eat, like myself, it’s a hefty $45 to enter. But if you go with 5 people, it’s $20/person. Isn’t that a sweet deal? Pun intended…

Winners will be judged for the following categories:

Best Overall Cupcake Design
Most Creative Use of ingredients
Most Likely to Be Eaten
Best Use of Theme
Best Overall Taste

Location: Fort Mason Center, Herbst Pavilion San Francisco, CA 94123

When: September 25th

Time: Open to the public 4pm to 9pm

Ticket Price: $45 Advance, $55 at the Door (4pm to 9pm)

Meeting Anthony Bourdain

Me and Bourdain

Here I am meeting the greatest food critic of my time. (I’m really bummed this picture is blurry.) Tony Bourdain has a pretty tough act on his show, but I was truly impressed by how genuine and down-to-earth he is.

First of all, he was scheduled to show up at 10am, but instead, he came at 9:30 and began signing. I arrived at the Book Passage in the Ferry Building at about 8:30am and was the 20th person in line.

I was so nervous when I met him, I made some lame small talk about how I have a food blog and that I started it because of him. He asked me what the name of the blog is and told me he’d check it out. Of course, I know he won’t since I’m sure 100 other people told him they had a food blog, but it was just nice that he offered.

Anyway, I walked away a very happy Bourdain fan and with 2 signed books! BTW, he is TALL!

Anthony Bourdain in SF today at Book Passage

I wasn’t going to announce this because I didn’t want to add to the crazy long line I’ll be waiting in tomorrow, but Anthony Bourdain will be at Book Passage in the Ferry Building tomorrow morning signing autographs. He’s visiting SF as part of his national book tour for his latest, Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook (Ecco, $26.99).

In addition to the book signing, Anthony will be appearing at a sold-out lunch at Il Fornaio on the Embarcadero and a sold-out dinner at Left Bank in Marin. I was told lunches were $150 at Il Fornaio. Not bad if you’re a big fan of Tony like I am.

Book Passage Ferry Building Book Signing with Tony Bourdain
When: Thurs., June 17, 10 a.m.
Where: Book Passage Bookstore, 1 Ferry Building (at Embarcadero), #42, 835-1020
Cost: Free, but you’ll need to purchase a book ($26.99 plus tax) to get Bourdain’s signature
