S and I are heading over to San Diego next week for a small convention.  I’m really looking forward to trying a few of the local dishes that many of my friends and colleagues have mentioned including the California Burrito, Carne Asada Fries and Fish Tacos.  They may have these dishes elsewhere, but I hear it’s the best in San Diego.

I’m looking forward to trying out Mexican Fiesta for their California Burrito. What is a California Burrito?  I’m glad you asked.  A California Burrito is a San Diego treat that consists of carne asada meat, French fries, cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole.  Doesn’t that sound delicious?

Next on the list? La Puerta to try out their Carne Asada fries which consists of french fries, carne asada, guacamole, sour cream and cheese.  I’m not really sure if this is supposed to be an appetizer or a meal, but it sounds really filling.  What’s up with the San Diego love of adding french fries to their Mexican food?

Last, I want to make sure I make a stop for some Baja-style fish tacos at La Fachada.  I’m dying to find out why everyone says San Diego has the best fish tacos in the world. I love Nick’s Crispy Tacos/Underdogs, but I’d love to have something to compare it to.

We’re also open to suggestions so if you have any places you think is awesome and is near Gaslamp, feel free to leave us a comment!  I’ll definitely make an effort to try the places your recommend.

Here is a shortened version of Rick Steves’ Jewish Ghetto Walk located here.

The Jewish Ghetto is at the east bank of the Tiber, near the Isola Tiberina and the Theater of Marcellus.  The day to avoid this walk is on Saturday when the synagogue and museum are closed.  This ghetto is the home to 15,000 Roman Jews forced to live here more than 300 years ago.

Ponte Fabricio

Ponte_Fabricio_Rome_Pierleoni

Start at the north end of the Ponte Fabricio.

What to see: Ponte Quattro Capi (“Bridge of the Four Heads”) – Statues of the four-faced pagan god Janus.

What to see: The embankment was buit in the late 19th century.  Before then, this was the most flooded zone along the Roman riverbank.

With your back to the river, at your left is the…

Synagogue (Sinagoga) and Jewish Museum (Museo Ebraico)

sinagoga

What to see: The Synagogue – This was the original center of the Jewish community.  The churchlike synagogue has a square dome, and is Art Nouveau with a dash of Tiffany.

What to see: The Jewish Museum shows off historically artifacts described in English.

Look for the yellow church across from the Ponte Fabricio…

Santa Maria della Pieta (a.k.a. San Gregorio)

Santa Maria della Pieta

What to see: The Santa Maria della Pieta – This is a Catholic church built to spread their faith to the Jews.

Walk towards the ancient Roman ruins, where there is a small square in front of the ruins called…

Largo 16 Ottobre 1943

This square is named for the date when the Nazis parked their trucks and threatened to take the Jews to concentration camps unless they came up with 50 kilos of gold.  In the end, they took the gold and the Jews.

Head to the ancient ruins…

Portico d’Ottavia

Rated: ♣

This place is so popular amongst my friends. I really don’t get it. It’s like mediocre Korean food in a room full of fobby Asians (Disclaimer – I am Asian and I have nothing against my people.) The main event here is the soju. So, if you plan to get drunk and you don’t care how your food tastes, come to The Spot.

The scene:

You’ll find The Spot on a residential block on Taraval. It’s easy to spot because of the pack of Asians smoking in front. This place is great for hosting parties. They have a room in the back with a karaoke machine that, I believe, is free to use. A friend of mine hosted a fundraising event there in which they gave her a percentage of the cost of food that was purchased in her party.

The food:

There are so many other Korean places in the Sunset that’s so much better. I’m guessing you’d have to look at this place as a bar and not a restaurant. The Spot has about 12 different flavors of soju ($14 each) including yogurt, guava, strawberry, mango, etc.

Kimchi Pancake – This was the best thing we ordered. the pancake was thin and chewy, but a little too sour for my liking. I don’t remember it being spicy either.

Chicken wings – The marinade on the wings were good – sweet and tangy. The downside was that it was a tad bit over cooked. The meat was tough and chewy.

Pork Bulgogi – Probably the worst bulgogi I’ve ever had. The taste didn’t even come close to any other Korean place I’ve been to. The meat was incredibly red from the food coloring and the sauce was way too thick and pasty. It was also way too sweet and it had no hint of spice at all. This is such a signature Korean dish, how could you mess this one up??

Spicy Rice Cakes – This dish also used the same thick, pasty sauce as the pork bulgogi. There were also way too many veggies in here. So much that they skimped out on the rice cakes.

Chicken Gizzards – This was just a plate of sautéed gizzards and vegetables. Very plain and oily, but the veggies tasted good.

All-in-all, I was very underwhelmed by the food. I think we paid about $25 per person for this meal too. I’d only recommend this place if you’re interested in bottles of soju with their free popcorn. It;s also a great place if you just want to have  party rather than a meal.

Dad Kitchen Salmon Plate

Here’s my dad’s super easy recipe for salmon. It takes less than 10 minutes to cook and it uses about 1/2 a teaspoon of everything. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1.5 lbs wild Sockeye Salmon
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp dried dill or couple sprigs of fresh dill
1 tbsp butter
1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp extra virgin olive oil

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to broil.

Place salmon on a baking sheet, skin-side down. Cut 6 thin slices of lemon and spread evenly across the salmon fillet, then sprinkle salt, pepper, garlic powder and dill. Add butter and a drizzle the olive oil over the fish.

Pop fish in the oven and cook for 5 minutes. Time may vary upon thickness of the fish.
